Dr. Christopher Moran and National Portrait Gallery host Reception & Dinner at Crosby Moran Hall – “William Dobson: Serjeant-Painter to King Charles I”

On 28th November 2023, Dr. Christopher Moran hosted a Reception & Dinner at Crosby Moran Hall on the subject of William Dobson: Serjeant-Painter to King Charles I together with the National Portrait Gallery.

Keynote speakers Catharine MacLeod, 17th Century Curator, National Portrait Gallery and Tabitha Barber, Curator of English Art, Tate Britain, spoke on the life and works of English court painter William Dobson (c.1611-1626), a portraitist who followed Van Dyck and painted at Oxford during the English Civil War.

On the evening, National Portrait Gallery patrons and guests viewed five pictures by William Dobson in the Crosby Moran Hall Collection, including William Dobson’s portrait of Charles I.
